The process of selecting a sufficient number of elements from the population so that by studying the sample and understanding the properties or characteristics of the sample subject it would be possible to generalize the properties or characteristics of the population.

Although it sounds easy but sampling could be divided into different techniques.
Relearn
Probability sampling: This sampling is known with non zero probability for every element.
Non probability sampling: The probability of selecting any particular member is unknown.
