Leadership & Team Development: Week 30

Personal Power

Learn
Personal power refers to the influence leaders have based on their personal qualities. These qualities enable them to attract and maintain the loyalty of their followers.

Unlearn
Interestingly, I realized that salary is not the only element that retain employee. Personal power as mentioned could be a vital reason followers are loyal to their leaders.

Relearn
There are 3 types of personal power i.e.

Work ethic:
Leaders who are willing to work hard and be alongside their people during crunch times gain personal respect. I witnessed this as my National Sales Manager are willing to spend his valuable time with me to visit and handle a customer complaint.

Expertise: Followers listen to leaders who have knowledge and expertise and are willing to share it. People have confidence in leaders who know what they are talking about.

Personal attraction: Leaders need to be seen as likeable and approachable. People want leaders who put them at ease and make them feel important. Most people are attracted to people who take interest in them. A sense of humor can also be a plus point. Therefore, in work environment I tried to inject humor in my team in order to make them at ease. I no longer try to be serious all the time as it creates a tension atmosphere.
