Leadership & Team Development: Week 27

Incomplete Leader

Learn
In the article In Praise of the Incomplete Leader, I learned that leadership is viewed as a set of four capabilities.
Sensemaking: understanding the context in which a company and its people operate
Relating: building relationships within and across organization
Visioning: Creating a compelling picture of the future
Inventing: Developing new ways to achieve the vision
These four capabilities are interdependent.

Unlearn
No leader is perfect. The best ones don’t try to be, they concentrate on honing their strengths and find others who can make up for their limitations. Thus, incomplete leaders differ from incompetent leaders in that they understand what they are good at and what they are not and have good judgment about how they can work with others to build on their strengths and offset their limitations.

Relearn
I understand that being a leader I am not perfect. With new sales executives in my team, I delegated the work to the seniors who are more familiar (compare to me) with the territory to bring them to the field of their respective territory. As the senior sales executive is more familiar with their respective territory, they would be able to do a better job in explaining to the new SE about the territory and the customer. Not only do I admit my weaknesses, I did not try to be perfect either. In fact I get the seniors to help with my weaknesses. The senior SE was happy to take greater responsibility in bringing junior SE around as well.
