I learned that linking performance management/appraisal with salary (merit related pay) is not necessary a good idea as research had reported that it is ineffective.
Unlearn
Pfizer’s current practice is Management by Objectives (MBO) which falls into this category. This serves as an indication that Pfizer employee may not be satisfied with the way they were appraised.
Relearn
This topic was brought up by me during an informal discussion with Managing Director and he did realize that Pfizer current MBO had a strong weightage on company performance where it is not directly related to individual Pfizer employee. In other words it is not fully controllable by Pfizer employee. He commented that we need to re-look into our MBO and probably come out with better way/options next year.
